Chapter 18

He leaned back in his seat, making a soft creaking sound as the old office chair was forced to work its hinges. It seemed like most meetings like this ended up with him being talked over and forgotten as people more important than he got into arguments about how things were supposed to be done.

“We’ve got more than enough corroboration, as well as details we didn’t have before,” Lieutenant Colonel Jalben, the “sergeant” who was the AIC point man on the planet, said. A lean, muscular if a bit short man, he impressed Titus with his piercing intellect, always asking the right questions.

Titus had met with the unholy trio, as Jalben referred to them, four more times before they left the planet. Each time, they’d revealed more and more of their overall operation. They had enough to crush the human trafficking ring, but there were hints of other operations that needed to be investigated. No mention was made of a Free States vice-minister, and Titus had not pushed for that. The AIC lead team would have been told the identity by Farran, but no one had mentioned the name to Titus.

“You know, we’re going to have to cooperate with the DSI on this,” the third man said.

Despite the relatively short time since then. Colonel Jaeger looked older than when he’d recruited Titus back at the hospital ward, with more wrinkles and more gray. The thought brought a twinge of pain to his healed-shoulder, and he absentmindedly rubbed it.

“We’ve been dealing with a smuggling ring in this sector for a long time,” Jaeger continued, sitting comfortably in his own chair, a mug of tea in his hands. “We can act now and bust the human trafficking, the drugs, some of the weapons, but that’s only within our own space. As for the rest . . .?”

“As for the rest, we request our allies to act. This isn’t a Free States issue. Go to the damned UAM, sir.”

“Sure, and what about our little internal problem in the ministries? Do we act now, or do we let things play out?”

“Yeah, about that. That’s why you colonels and generals get the big credits. What does the director think?”

The “director” in this case was the head of G2, which made him the head of the entire Army Intelligence Corps. He answered to the Director of State Intelligence, and was on an even level with the Director of Naval Intelligence, the Director of the Internal Security Agency, and the Director of External Surveillance. Each leg of the DSI “chair” tended to be jealous of the others, and they hated to cooperate and share information. But with a vice-minister in the crosshairs, this was above mere Army concerns.

“This is a sophisticated operation, and we can’t let them get away with it because of internal squabbling within the community.

“So sophisticated that a private was able to unravel it by looking through some errant communications?” Jalben asked with a soft chuckle.

“Corporal,” Jaeger corrected. “That collar device is for real now.
